Treatment and prevention of recurrence depends on the cause of the obstruction. Urinalysis and stone analysis will help the veterinarian advise you of the proper home care.
If the cause is struvite calculi, the following applies: Feed a food low in magnesium that produces urine with a pH between 6 and 6.5. There are many commercial foods that state on the label that the food produces an acid urine or that it is meant for cats with urinary problems. Our hospital has dietary foods produced specifically for cats with struvite crystals. Hills feline C/D and S/D are available in dry and canned form. We also have a Purina struvite urolithiasis preventing food. Once the signs are controlled, supermarket formulations such a Purina Special Care, Alpo urinary diet and Friskies canned urinary diet seem to reduce likelihood of recurrence. Strict adherence to feeding exclusively acid urine producing canned diets is the most effective long term method of controlling struvite caused FUS.
Some types of crystals such as oxalate and urate crystals may be caused by diets that produce acid urine. Urinalysis or stone analysis are used to determine which are involved. If you have been feeding a proper diet and the signs still occur, urinalysis is helpful but analysis of the obstruction causing material is the most accurate way of knowing the cause.
- Feed canned food
- Encourage fluids. Change drinking water daily because many cats refuse stale water. Make sure your cat has easy access to the water.
- Check the litter box daily for signs of urination. During acute episodes, separate it from your other cats and use a smaller amount of litter so you can monitor urine output.
- Do not leave the cat unattended for extended time. If you must board your cat, tell the attendant to watch for danger signs. Obstruction is more likely to occur during times of stress.
- Antibiotics are only helpful for treating secondary infection. This is usually short term.
- Acidifiers should only be used if your cat will not eat the prescribed food. This may be needed long term if the cat will not eat prescribed food. If acidifiers are used, acidifying foods should not he used as excessive acid can cause other problems.
- Antispasmodics are occasionally used to relieve spasms and make urinating less painful.
